Habitat
Raptors, like all birds, face a number of threats but the biggest threat of all is habitat loss. Clearing of native vegetation and draining of wetlands for housing and farming has left many raptor species without suitable nesting sites and/or large enough hunting territories.
New housing developments usually lack mature trees. Old trees and dead trees provide hollows, nesting sites and high perch vantage points.
Many birds and animals only nest in tree hollows.
Trees hollows take 100 years or more to form, so they cannot be replaced within our lifetime.
